Rick Gier will present advice about how to avoid six common legal mistakes made by small businesses.  Rick draws on his experience in business and as an attorney counseling small businesses to point out some common situations and what start-up and emerging businesses can do to reduce risks and enhance chances for success.  Topics will include legal entities, contracts, employment, trademarks, copyright and litigation issues.

Bio

Rick Gier is owner of his own home-based small business.  Rick advises small businesses and their owners from pre-start-up planning through expansion and ultimately sale or closure.  Rick has bachelors degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration, an MBA and law degree, all from the University of Kansas.  He worked in manufacturing and consulting for many years before attending law school.  He has been practicing for twelve years, serving business clients in Kansas and Missouri.  Rick is a frequent guest speaker on legal topics in Kansas City, including Kaufman FastTrac courses and KSBDC’s “Success Right From the Start” course for entrepreneurs.  Rick has authored several articles, including five for KC Small Business.  He received the SBA Region VII 2009 Small Business Champion of the Year Award for his support of home-based businesses in Kansas.
